MEFV
MEFV is a gene located on chromosome 16 that provides instructions for producing a protein called pyrin. This protein plays a crucial role in regulating the immune system and inflammation. Mutations in the MEFV gene can lead to various inflammatory conditions, most notably Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), which is characterized by recurrent fever and painful inflammation of the abdomen, chest, or joints.
Individuals with FMF often experience episodes of fever and pain, which can be triggered by stress, infections, or certain foods. The condition is more common in people of Mediterranean descent. Treatment typically involves medications to manage symptoms and prevent attacks, improving the quality of life for those affected.
