Linji school
The Linji school, also known as the Linji school of Chan, is a prominent tradition within Chinese Zen Buddhism. Founded by the monk Linji Yixuan in the 9th century, it emphasizes direct experience and the importance of sudden enlightenment. The school is known for its use of koans—paradoxical anecdotes or riddles used in meditation to provoke deep thought and insight.
The Linji school is characterized by its dynamic teaching style, often involving shouting or striking to jolt students into awareness. This approach aims to break through conventional thinking and foster a deeper understanding of one's true nature. The school's influence has spread beyond China, impacting various Zen traditions in Japan and other countries.
