Linji school of Chan
The Linji school of Chan is a prominent tradition within Chinese Buddhism, known for its emphasis on direct experience and spontaneous insight. Founded by the monk Linji Yixuan in the 9th century, it focuses on the practice of meditation and the use of koans—paradoxical questions or statements designed to provoke deep thought and realization.
This school is characterized by its dynamic teaching style, often involving abrupt actions or shouts to awaken students. The Linji school has significantly influenced various forms of Zen Buddhism, particularly in Japan, where it is known as the Rinzai school.
