Lates
Lates are a group of fish belonging to the family Latidae, commonly known as the perch family. They are primarily found in freshwater and brackish environments, particularly in rivers and lakes. Lates species are known for their elongated bodies and sharp teeth, making them effective predators. The most well-known species is the Nile perch, which is popular in both commercial fishing and aquaculture.
These fish are characterized by their ability to grow to large sizes, with some individuals reaching over 200 centimeters in length. Lates are important to local economies, providing food and livelihoods for many communities. However, overfishing and habitat loss pose significant threats to their populations.
