Lates Niloticus
Lates niloticus, commonly known as the Nile perch, is a large freshwater fish native to the Nile River and other African lakes, including Lake Victoria. It can grow up to 2 meters in length and weigh over 200 kilograms. This species is known for its elongated body and sharp teeth, making it a formidable predator in its habitat.
The Nile perch plays a significant role in local fisheries and is a popular target for commercial fishing due to its tasty white flesh. However, its introduction to Lake Victoria has led to ecological changes, impacting native fish populations and biodiversity in the region.
