Jacobite Rising of 1715
The Jacobite Rising of 1715 was an attempt by supporters of the House of Stuart to restore James Francis Edward Stuart, known as the Old Pretender, to the British throne. The uprising began in Scotland after the death of Queen Anne and was fueled by discontent among the Scottish clans and the desire to reinstate the Catholic monarchy.
The rebellion saw initial successes, including the capture of Edinburgh, but ultimately faced defeat at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in November 1715. The rising ended with the retreat of Jacobite forces, leading to increased repression of Scottish culture and further attempts to suppress the Jacobite cause in subsequent years.
