International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established by the United Nations in 1993 to prosecute serious crimes committed during the Yugoslav Wars, which took place in the 1990s. The tribunal aimed to hold individuals accountable for war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity, promoting justice and reconciliation in the region.
The ICTY operated in The Hague, Netherlands, and concluded its work in 2017. It was significant for its role in developing international law and setting precedents for future tribunals, including the International Criminal Court (ICC). Notable figures prosecuted included Slobodan Milošević and Radovan Karadžić.
