History of Christianity in Ethiopia
Christianity in Ethiopia dates back to the 4th century when it became the state religion under King Ezana of the Aksumite Empire. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, one of the oldest Christian denominations, was established during this time, influenced by early missionaries like Frumentius, who is considered the first bishop of Ethiopia.
Throughout the centuries, Ethiopia maintained its Christian identity despite various challenges, including Islamic conquests and internal conflicts. The country is known for its unique traditions, such as the celebration of Timkat and the construction of rock-hewn churches in Lalibela, which reflect its rich Christian heritage.
