Greek monarchy
The Greek monarchy refers to the historical system of governance in which a king or queen ruled over Greece. This system was prominent in ancient times, with notable monarchs such as King Agamemnon during the Trojan War. The monarchy played a significant role in shaping Greek culture, politics, and society.
In modern times, Greece had a constitutional monarchy from the 19th century until the abolition of the monarchy in 1974. King George I was the first king of the modern Greek state, followed by other monarchs like King Constantine II. Today, Greece is a parliamentary republic, and the monarchy no longer exists.
