Government of India Act 1935
The Government of India Act 1935 was a significant piece of legislation passed by the British Parliament to provide a framework for governance in India. It aimed to introduce a federal structure, allowing provinces to have more autonomy and self-governance. The Act established a bicameral legislature at the center and in provinces, and it also expanded the electorate, although it still excluded many Indians from voting.
Despite its intentions, the Act faced criticism for not granting full self-rule and for maintaining British control over key areas like defense and foreign affairs. It laid the groundwork for future political developments in India, ultimately leading to the demand for independence and the eventual partition in 1947.
