Government of India Act
The Government of India Act was a significant piece of legislation passed by the British Parliament in 1935. It aimed to provide a framework for governance in India, introducing a federal structure and allowing for greater self-governance. The Act established a system of provincial autonomy and created a bicameral legislature at the central level, which included elected representatives.
This Act was a response to the growing demand for Indian self-rule and was influenced by the recommendations of the Simon Commission. Although it expanded political participation, many Indian leaders, including those from the Indian National Congress, felt it fell short of full independence.
