Genital Mutilation
Genital Mutilation, often referred to as Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. This practice is rooted in cultural, religious, or social beliefs and is prevalent in some regions of Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia. It can lead to severe physical and psychological consequences for those affected.
The procedure is typically performed on young girls, often before puberty, and can result in complications such as infections, chronic pain, and complications during childbirth. Efforts to eliminate FGM focus on education, community engagement, and legal measures to protect the rights and health of women and girls.
