General Court-Martial
A General Court-Martial is a military court that handles serious offenses committed by service members. It is composed of a panel of officers and, in some cases, enlisted personnel. This court can impose severe penalties, including confinement, dishonorable discharge, or even the death penalty, depending on the nature of the crime.
The procedures in a General Court-Martial are similar to civilian trials, including the presentation of evidence and witness testimonies. The accused has the right to legal representation, and the trial is overseen by a military judge. This court is part of the military justice system, governed by the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).
