French Wine Classification
French wine classification is primarily based on the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system, which regulates the production of wine in specific regions. This system ensures that wines meet certain standards regarding grape varieties, production methods, and geographical boundaries. The AOC hierarchy includes categories such as AOC, Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieure (VDQS), and Vin de Pays.
Within the AOC system, wines are further classified into four main levels: Grand Cru, Premier Cru, Village, and Regional. Grand Cru wines are the highest quality, sourced from the best vineyards, while Regional wines represent broader areas. This classification helps consumers identify the quality and origin of French wines.
