Exonerated Five
The "Exonerated Five" refers to five Black and Latino teenagers from New York City who were wrongfully convicted in the 1989 assault and rape of Central Park jogger Trisha Meili. The case gained national attention due to the coerced confessions obtained by police, despite a lack of physical evidence linking them to the crime.
In 2002, Matias Reyes, a convicted murderer, confessed to the crime, leading to the exoneration of the five men—Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, and Korey Wise. Their story highlights issues of racial bias and flaws in the criminal justice system.
