She was the daughter of Charles I Louis, Elector Palatine, and Elizabeth Stuart, the daughter of James VI and I. Elizabeth Charlotte became a prominent figure in the French court after her marriage to Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, the brother of King Louis XIV.
