E. V. Ramasamy
E. V. Ramasamy, commonly known as Periyar, was an influential Indian social reformer and activist born on September 17, 1879. He is best known for his efforts to promote rationalism, self-respect, and social equality, particularly for the marginalized communities in Tamil Nadu. Ramasamy founded the Self-Respect Movement in 1925, advocating for the rights of the lower castes and challenging the caste system.
Ramasamy was also a prominent critic of Hindu orthodoxy and religious dogmas. He established the Dravidar Kazhagam political party, which aimed to uplift the Dravidian people and promote their rights. His legacy continues to influence social justice movements in India today.
