Self-Respect Movement
The Self-Respect Movement was a social reform movement in India that emerged in the 1920s, primarily led by E.V. Ramasamy, also known as Periyar. It aimed to promote the dignity and rights of the lower castes and challenge the existing caste system. The movement emphasized self-respect, rational thinking, and the importance of education to empower marginalized communities.
The movement sought to eradicate social injustices, including untouchability and discrimination based on caste. It encouraged individuals to reject oppressive practices and embrace their identity with pride. Through public meetings, literature, and activism, the Self-Respect Movement played a significant role in advocating for social equality and reform in Indian society.
