Deltawerken
The Deltawerken is a series of dams, sluices, locks, dikes, and storm surge barriers located in the southwestern part of the Netherlands. This extensive system was developed to protect the low-lying areas from flooding, particularly after the devastating North Sea Flood of 1953. The project is considered one of the most significant engineering feats in the world.
Completed in the 1990s, the Deltawerken consists of several key structures, including the Oosterscheldekering, which is a storm surge barrier that can be closed during extreme weather. The system not only enhances flood protection but also improves navigation and water management in the region.
