Oosterscheldekering
The Oosterscheldekering is a major storm surge barrier located in the Netherlands. It is part of the Delta Works, a series of dams and barriers designed to protect the country from flooding. Completed in 1986, the structure spans approximately 9 kilometers and connects the islands of Schouwen-Duiveland and Noord-Beveland.
The barrier consists of 65 large sluice gates that can be closed during severe storms to prevent high water from entering the Oosterschelde Estuary. This innovative engineering project not only protects the surrounding areas but also allows for the natural tidal flow, supporting local ecosystems.
