Cyprus Conflict
The Cyprus Conflict refers to the ongoing dispute between the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots on the island of Cyprus. The conflict began in the mid-20th century, primarily due to ethnic tensions and differing national identities. In 1974, a coup by Greek nationalists led to a Turkish invasion, resulting in the island being divided into the Republic of Cyprus in the south and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north, which is only recognized by Turkey.
Efforts to reunify the island have been made through various negotiations and peace talks, but a lasting solution has yet to be achieved. The division has led to significant political, social, and economic challenges for both communities. International organizations, including the United Nations, continue to facilitate discussions to resolve the conflict and promote peace on the island.
