Corneal Transplant
A corneal transplant, also known as keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure that replaces a damaged or diseased cornea with a healthy donor cornea. The cornea is the clear front part of the eye that helps focus light. This procedure can improve vision, reduce pain, and restore the appearance of the eye for individuals with conditions like corneal scarring, keratoconus, or corneal dystrophies.
During the surgery, the surgeon removes the affected cornea and stitches the donor cornea into place. The donor tissue is usually obtained from an eye bank, ensuring it is safe and compatible. Recovery can take time, and patients may need to use eye drops and attend follow-up appointments to monitor healing.
