Chinese star anise
Chinese star anise, scientifically known as Illicium verum, is a spice that comes from the star-shaped fruit of a tree native to Southeast Asia. It has a strong, sweet flavor reminiscent of licorice and is commonly used in various cuisines, particularly in Chinese cooking. The spice is often found in five-spice powder and is used to enhance soups, stews, and braised dishes.
The fruit is harvested when it is ripe and then dried to develop its flavor. In addition to its culinary uses, Chinese star anise contains shikimic acid, a compound used in the production of oseltamivir, an antiviral medication for treating influenza. Its unique flavor and medicinal properties make it a valuable ingredient in both cooking and herbal remedies.
