Charles Augustus, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach
Charles Augustus, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, was born on September 2, 1818, and ruled from 1853 until his death in 1901. He was a member of the House of Wettin and played a significant role in the cultural and political life of his duchy. His reign is noted for promoting the arts and education, making Weimar a center of German culture.
Under his leadership, the duchy became known for its support of notable figures such as the writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the composer Richard Wagner. Charles Augustus was also involved in the political changes of the time, including the unification of Germany in 1871.
