Carbon Dioxide Retention
Carbon Dioxide Retention refers to the condition where the body retains excess carbon dioxide (CO2) instead of expelling it through breathing. This can occur due to various factors, including lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or conditions that affect the respiratory system. When CO2 builds up in the bloodstream, it can lead to respiratory acidosis, where the blood becomes more acidic.
Symptoms of CO2 retention may include shortness of breath, confusion, and fatigue. Treatment often involves improving ventilation to help the body eliminate excess CO2, which may include the use of supplemental oxygen or mechanical ventilation in severe cases.
