Brazilian Military Regime
The Brazilian Military Regime was a period of authoritarian rule in Brazil from 1964 to 1985. It began with a military coup that overthrew President João Goulart, who was seen as a leftist threat. The regime implemented strict censorship, suppressed political opposition, and used violence against dissenters, leading to human rights abuses.
During this time, the government focused on economic modernization and infrastructure development, known as the Brazilian Miracle, which resulted in rapid growth. However, this growth was accompanied by rising inequality and social unrest. The regime eventually transitioned to democracy, culminating in the election of Tancredo Neves in 1985.
