Body-focused Repetitive Behaviors
Body-focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs) are a group of actions that involve repetitive movements or behaviors directed at one's own body. Common examples include hair pulling (trichotillomania), skin picking (dermatillomania), and nail biting (onychophagia). These behaviors can lead to physical damage and emotional distress, often serving as a coping mechanism for stress or anxiety.
Individuals with BFRBs may find it challenging to control these urges, which can interfere with daily life and social interactions. Treatment options often include therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and support groups to help manage and reduce these behaviors effectively.
