Baldwin IX, Count of Hainaut
Baldwin IX, Count of Hainaut was a nobleman born around 1171. He became the Count of Hainaut in 1195 and was known for his leadership during the Crusades. Baldwin IX was also a key figure in the establishment of the Latin Empire of Constantinople after the Fourth Crusade.
In 1204, he was elected as the first Emperor of the Latin Empire, taking the name Baldwin I of Constantinople. His reign was marked by challenges, including conflicts with rival factions and the need to secure the newly established empire. Baldwin IX died in 1205 during a battle against the Bulgarians.
