Awabakal
The Awabakal people are an Indigenous Australian group from the coastal region of New South Wales, particularly around Newcastle and the Hunter River. They have a rich cultural heritage, with a deep connection to the land and waterways, which are central to their traditions and lifestyle.
Historically, the Awabakal people engaged in fishing, hunting, and gathering, utilizing the natural resources of their environment. Their language, also called Awabakal, is part of the Pama-Nyungan language family. Today, efforts are being made to revive and preserve their language and cultural practices for future generations.
