Antipope Benedict XIV
Antipope Benedict XIV, also known as Benedict XIV of the Schism, was a figure in the history of the Catholic Church who claimed the papacy during the Western Schism in the 15th century. He was elected in 1425 by a faction of cardinals who opposed the legitimate pope, Martin V. His reign lasted until 1430, but he was never recognized by the broader Church.
Benedict XIV's claim to the papacy was part of a larger conflict that saw multiple individuals asserting papal authority simultaneously. This period was marked by political and religious turmoil, as different regions supported different claimants, complicating the Church's unity and governance.
