Acarnania
Acarnania is a historical region located in northwestern Greece, bordered by the Ionian Sea to the west and the Achelous River to the east. It was known for its rugged terrain and numerous small islands, making it a strategic area in ancient times. The region was inhabited by the Acarnanians, a group of Greek tribes who played a significant role in various historical events, including conflicts with neighboring regions.
In ancient times, Acarnania was often in conflict with Aetolia and was involved in the Peloponnesian War. The region was also known for its cities, such as Stratos and Oeniadae, which contributed to its cultural and political significance. Today, Acarnania is part of the modern Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit in Greece.
