venous thromboembolism
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a medical condition that includes two related issues: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs, causing pain and swelling. If a part of this clot breaks off, it can travel to the lungs, leading to a PE, which can be life-threatening.
VTE can affect anyone but is more common in individuals with certain risk factors, such as prolonged immobility, surgery, or certain medical conditions. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to prevent complications and improve outcomes for those affected by VTE.
