A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is an infection that occurs in any part of the urinary system, which includes the bladder, urethra, and kidneys. It is most commonly caused by bacteria entering the urinary tract. Symptoms can include a strong urge to urinate, a burning sensation while urinating, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine.
UTIs are more common in women than in men, but anyone can get one. Treatment usually involves antibiotics to eliminate the infection. Drinking plenty of water and practicing good hygiene can help prevent UTIs from occurring in the first place.
