tPA (Therapy)
tPA, or tissue plasminogen activator, is a medication used to dissolve blood clots in patients experiencing a stroke or certain types of heart attacks. It works by converting plasminogen, a protein in the blood, into plasmin, which breaks down fibrin, the main component of blood clots. Administering tPA quickly can significantly improve recovery outcomes.
tPA is most effective when given within a few hours of the onset of symptoms. It is typically administered in a hospital setting under the supervision of medical professionals. While it can be life-saving, tPA is not suitable for everyone and carries risks, such as bleeding complications.
