The seminiferous tubules are coiled structures located within the testes, responsible for the production of sperm cells. These tubules are lined with specialized cells called Sertoli cells, which support and nourish developing sperm. The process of sperm production, known as spermatogenesis, occurs within these tubules.
Each seminiferous tubule is surrounded by connective tissue and contains germ cells at various stages of development. The mature sperm cells are eventually released into the epididymis, where they undergo further maturation and are stored until ejaculation. This intricate system is essential for male fertility.
