Spermatogenesis is the process by which male gametes, or sperm cells, are produced in the testes. It begins with spermatogonia, which are stem cells that undergo several stages of division and maturation. This process results in the formation of mature sperm cells, known as spermatozoa.
The entire process of spermatogenesis takes about 64 to 72 days and involves several key stages: mitosis, where spermatogonia divide; meiosis, which reduces the chromosome number; and spermiogenesis, where the sperm cells develop their tails and become motile. This complex process is essential for reproduction in males.
