premature infants
Premature infants are babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy are completed. A typical pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, so these infants are born too early, which can lead to various health challenges. They may weigh less than 5.5 pounds and often require special medical care to help them grow and develop.
Due to their early arrival, premature infants may have underdeveloped organs, particularly their lungs and brain. This can result in difficulties with breathing, feeding, and maintaining body temperature. Many premature infants spend time in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to receive the necessary support and monitoring for their health.
