nontuberculous mycobacteria
Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are a group of bacteria that are commonly found in the environment, particularly in soil and water. Unlike Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes tuberculosis, NTM typically do not spread from person to person. They can, however, cause infections, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems or underlying lung conditions.
Infections caused by NTM can affect the lungs, skin, and other parts of the body. Symptoms may include cough, fatigue, and weight loss, similar to those of tuberculosis. Treatment often involves a prolonged course of antibiotics, as NTM can be resistant to standard treatments used for tuberculosis.
