Environmental Mycobacteria
Environmental mycobacteria are a group of bacteria commonly found in soil, water, and various environmental settings. They are distinct from the pathogenic species that cause diseases like tuberculosis and leprosy. These non-pathogenic mycobacteria play a role in nutrient cycling and can be involved in the decomposition of organic matter.
Some species of environmental mycobacteria, such as Mycobacterium avium, can occasionally cause opportunistic infections, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems. While they are generally harmless, understanding their ecology and behavior is important for public health and environmental monitoring.
