lacquer tree
The lacquer tree, known scientifically as Toxicodendron vernicifluum, is a deciduous tree native to East Asia. It is primarily cultivated for its sap, which is used to produce lacquer, a glossy finish for various crafts and furniture. The tree can grow up to 15 meters tall and has compound leaves that turn yellow in autumn.
The sap of the lacquer tree contains a resin called urushiol, which can cause skin irritation in some people. Once harvested, the sap is processed and applied in multiple layers to create a durable, water-resistant coating. This traditional technique has been used for centuries in Japanese and Chinese art and craftsmanship.
