Urushi
Urushi is a traditional Japanese lacquer made from the sap of the urushi tree, also known as the lacquer tree. This natural resin is prized for its durability, water resistance, and beautiful finish. Artisans apply it in multiple layers to create a glossy surface that enhances the appearance of various materials, including wood, metal, and ceramics.
The process of applying Urushi requires skill and precision, as it must be done in a controlled environment to prevent dust and moisture from affecting the finish. Once cured, Urushi can be polished to a high shine and is often used in decorative arts, such as Maki-e, where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto the lacquer for intricate designs.
