high ankle sprain
A high ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments above the ankle joint are stretched or torn, typically affecting the syndesmosis that connects the two bones of the lower leg, the tibia and fibula. This injury often happens during activities that involve twisting or sudden changes in direction, such as in sports like football or basketball.
Symptoms of a high ankle sprain include pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. Unlike a regular ankle sprain, which affects the ligaments on the outside of the ankle, a high ankle sprain can take longer to heal and may require more intensive treatment, including rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE).
