syndesmosis
Syndesmosis is a type of fibrous joint where two bones are connected by a ligament. This joint allows for limited movement, providing stability while still permitting some flexibility. An example of syndesmosis is found between the tibia and fibula in the lower leg, where a strong ligament holds the two bones together.
In a syndesmosis joint, the bones are not directly connected by cartilage, unlike other joints such as synovial joints. Instead, the fibrous tissue allows for slight movement, which can be important for activities like walking or running. Injuries to syndesmosis joints, such as a high ankle sprain, can affect mobility and require medical attention.
