arteritic AION
Arteritic AION, or arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy, is a condition that occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is reduced due to inflammation of the arteries. This often happens in individuals with giant cell arteritis, a type of vasculitis that affects older adults. Symptoms typically include sudden vision loss in one eye, often accompanied by pain.
Diagnosis is usually made through a combination of clinical evaluation, blood tests for inflammation, and sometimes a temporal artery biopsy. Treatment often involves high doses of corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and prevent further vision loss. Early intervention is crucial for preserving vision.
