Yagli Gures
Yagli Gures, or oil wrestling, is a traditional Turkish sport that dates back centuries. Competitors, known as pehlivans, wear leather trousers called kispet and are doused in olive oil to make grappling more challenging. The goal is to pin the opponent to the ground, showcasing strength, skill, and technique.
The most famous event for Yagli Gures is the annual Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Festival held in Edirne, Turkey. This festival attracts wrestlers from various regions and celebrates Turkish culture. The event is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, highlighting its significance in Turkish history and tradition.
