Western gorillas are one of two species of gorillas, primarily found in the dense forests of Central Africa. They are divided into two subspecies: the Western lowland gorilla and the Cross River gorilla. These primates are known for their large size, with males weighing up to 440 pounds, and they have a predominantly herbivorous diet, feeding on leaves, fruits, and stems. Western gorillas are social animals, living in groups called troops led by a dominant male known as a silverback. They communicate through vocalizations, gestures, and facial expressions. Unfortunately, they are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease, making conservation efforts essential for their survival.
