Cross River gorilla
The Cross River gorilla is a critically endangered subspecies of the western gorilla, found primarily in the mountainous regions along the border of Nigeria and Cameroon. It is the rarest of all gorilla subspecies, with an estimated population of fewer than 300 individuals. These gorillas inhabit dense forests and are known for their shy and elusive nature.
Cross River gorillas are characterized by their smaller size and distinct facial features compared to other gorilla subspecies. They primarily feed on leaves, fruits, and stems, playing a vital role in their ecosystem by aiding in seed dispersal. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect their habitat and ensure their survival.
