Welsh princes
The term "Welsh princes" refers to the rulers of various regions in Wales during the medieval period. These princes often belonged to noble families and held power over specific territories, such as Gwynedd, Deheubarth, and Powys. They played a significant role in Welsh history, particularly in resisting English conquest and maintaining Welsh culture and identity.
One of the most notable Welsh princes was Llywelyn the Great, who united several regions in the 13th century. His grandson, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, also known as Llywelyn the Last, became the last sovereign prince of Wales before the English annexation in 1536. The legacy of these princes continues to influence Welsh national identity today.
