War Gardens
War Gardens, also known as victory gardens, were vegetable, fruit, and herb gardens planted by civilians during times of war, particularly during World War I and World War II. These gardens aimed to supplement food supplies and boost morale by encouraging self-sufficiency among citizens.
Governments promoted War Gardens to alleviate pressure on commercial food production and ensure that troops received adequate supplies. Many families transformed their backyards, parks, and vacant lots into productive gardens, contributing to the war effort while also enjoying fresh produce during challenging times.
