Waipoua Forest is a protected area located on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is renowned for its ancient kauri trees, some of which are over 2,000 years old. The forest covers approximately 10,500 hectares and is part of the larger Waipoua Forest Sanctuary, which aims to preserve its unique ecosystem.
The forest is home to diverse wildlife, including native birds like the tui and kereru. Visitors can explore various walking tracks, such as the popular Tāne Mahuta track, which leads to the largest known living kauri tree in the world. Waipoua Forest is a significant cultural site for the local Ngāpuhi iwi (tribe).
